ADHD in adults

Dr Popelyuk and his team of clinicians are highly experienced in treating adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and we can offer assessments to new and existing patients.

If you suspect you are suffering from ADHD, you should read about the symptoms and types of diagnoses for this condition before making an appointment at our clinic: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

New patients

If you are a new patient who has not already been diagnosed with ADHD, you will first need to complete the diagnostic interview for adults with ADHD (DIVA-5) with one of our clinical psychologists. You will then need to complete the psychiatric assessment, along with a physical examination, with Dr Popelyuk or another of our psychiatrists.

This assessment will take place over two appointments. The first will can be completed via video link, while the second preferably should take place in person at our outpatient clinic at 70 Harley Street. A report, including the diagnosis, will be sent to you following each assessment.

The cost of the assessment is £1000 and follow up appointments with your psychiatrist are charged at £350.

For new patients who already have a diagnosis of ADHD, provided that you can provide us with your diagnosis ahead of your initial assessment, you will be able to see Dr Popelyuk or another psychiatrist, charged at £600. Follow up appointment are charged at £350.

Existing patients

Existing patients who are already seeing Dr Popelyuk or one of his colleagues for other mental health conditions within the general psychiatric practice need only to complete the DIVA-5 assessment before their next appointment. The cost of the DIVA-5 assessment alone is £500 and you will receive a diagnosis report following your assessment. You will need to have a follow up appointment with your psychiatrist before they can prescribe medication.

While it is possible to hand over the prescribing to your GP, it is usually the case that your psychiatrist will need to monitor you for a period of at least three months until you are stable on your medication. Once a shared care arrangement has been set up with your GP, you will need to continue seeing your psychiatrist at least every three months initially, reducing in frequency while you are under the care of your psychiatrist. Please note, if you fail to continue seeing your psychiatrist, we are obliged to let your GP know and your NHS prescriptions may stop.

Important information

To be diagnosed with ADHD, collateral information is necessary to corroborate a history of the symptoms with an onset of symptoms during childhood. This can be from a partner, parent or, should you have access to them, your school reports.

Stimulant medication is a controlled drug in the United Kingdom and physical prescriptions must be received by most pharmacists before they are able to issue medication to patients.

It is also not suitable for all patients and a detailed mental health and physical health history is required before you can begin stimulant medication – this is conducted during your appointment but may require the involvement of other specialists outside the clinic such as cardiologists.
